Abstract
Beta amyloid peptides are produced in high amount during Alzheimer’s disease but they are also produced by normal brain cells and found in pico-nano molar range in the cerebrospinal fluid of healthy individuals. Therefore the possibility that they might have a neuromodulatory role in the regulation of normal synaptic function it’s likely to occur. In this presentation we report an extension of  recent data concerning the effects of beta amyloid peptides on neurotransmitter release in the rat CNS.
Using in vivo and in vitro approaches we demonstrated that beta amyloid can affect  the cholinergic  control of  neurotransmitters release in different brain areas (Preda et al. 2008; Mura et al. 2010;      Grilli et al. 2010). These findings may be relevant both for the definition of the putative physiological modulatory role of beta amyloid peptides and for the understanding, even before the neurodegenerative phase, of the molecular bases of the disruption of neurotransmitter function in Alzheimer’ disease.
