Abstract
Although the recent European Directive is configured as "an important step towards the ultimate objective of complete replacement of procedures on live animals for scientific and educational as soon as it is scientifically possible," in the preamble recognizes that "although it is desirable to replace procedures in the use of live animals with methods not entailing the use, the use of live animals continues to be necessary to protect human and animal health and the environment. "

From this it follows, therefore, the need to constantly check the compromise required between the welfare and benefit of the community, guiding principle that has accompanied groups of experts involved in the review of the previous Directive since 2004.

In the selection of procedures to be adopted in the biomedical field should therefore be taken into proper consideration at least the following aspects:
- Aims and purposes of the research
- Existence and progress of procedures "alternatives"
- Impact of research on the welfare of the community
- The impact of procedures on animal welfare
- Regulatory requirements of international agencies
